A bouncy castle is a hit at every event - but what if unpleasant mold gets around? Especially after damp days or long-term storage, mold on the bouncy castle can not only look unsightly, but can also be harmful to health. But don't worry, with the right steps you can get your bouncy castle sparkling clean and safe for the next use!
Why does mold appear on the bouncy castle?
Mold loves moisture and warmth. If a bouncy castle is not completely dry before it is folded and stored, you create ideal conditions for mold growth. Storage in damp basements or garages can also contribute to the formation of mold.
A wet bouncy castle can be rolled up while damp for approximately 2-4 weeks before mold develops. The exact time depends on the outside temperatures: the warmer it is, the faster it goes (around 2 weeks in summer, more like 3-4 weeks in winter). The tarpaulin material also plays a role; some materials are more susceptible to mold than others. So it is crucial to understand the cause to prevent future infestations.
What you need: Your tool list
Before you get started, make sure you have all the necessary materials on hand:
- Gloves and safety glasses: To protect your skin and eyes from mold spores and cleaning products.
- PVC cleaner or special mold cleaner: Do not use harsh chemicals that could damage the material of the bouncy castle. Vinegar water (mixing ratio 1:1 with water) is a good natural alternative.
- Soft brush or sponge: To gently scrub away mold without scratching the material.
- Bucket/bucket of clean water: For rinsing.
- Garden hose/high-pressure cleaner: For rinsing large areas.
- Wipes: To wipe away dirt and mold.
- Lots of sunlight and warm weather: the best natural helpers for drying.
Step-by-step instructions: remove mold

Step 1: Build the bouncy castle and make it accessible
Spread the bouncy castle out in a well-ventilated area, ideally outside on a sunny day. This means you can easily reach all affected areas.
Step 2: Remove coarse mold
Gently brush away any loose mold with a dry brush. Be careful not to rub too hard to avoid spreading the spores unnecessarily.
Step 3: Apply cleaning agent
Mix your PVC cleaner or mold cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions. For vinegar water: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution generously onto the moldy areas. Allow the solution to take effect for a few minutes (follow manufacturer's instructions).
Step 4: Scrub off mold
Use the soft brush or sponge to gently but thoroughly scrub away the mold. Work in small sections and rinse the brush/sponge regularly in clean water.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the cleaned areas thoroughly with clean water, preferably with a garden hose or pressure washer. When using a high-pressure cleaner, ensure there is sufficient distance from the PVC material (approx. 40-50 cm) to avoid damage. Be sure to remove any soap or detergent residue, otherwise it could leave stains or damage the material.
Step 6: Tip for bouncy castles with slides
If your Bouncy castle a slide remove the anti-slip tarpaulin. Also clean the underside of the slide and the area under the slide tarpaulin, as mold often forms there and this can be a trigger for further mold growth.
Step 7: Dry, dry, dry!
This is the most important step in preventing new mold growth. Allow the bouncy castle to air dry completely. If you have a non-slip tarpaulin, remove it and make sure that the areas with the Velcro connections dry - these are often overlooked. This works best on a sunny, warm day. Lift the bouncy castle and place a Euro pallet upright on the underside (this is possible for smaller and medium-sized bouncy castles) so that the underside also dries. Any residual moisture, no matter how small, can promote new mold. If necessary, you can use heaters to blow warm air into the bounce house to speed up the drying process.
If your bounce house is extremely wet and there is actual puddle water forming inside the bounce house (when you look inside the zippers and see the inner panels/chambers) in order to get this water out, it would be best to fold the bounce house back up. By folding, rolling and pressing, you squeeze the water out of the inside of the bouncy castle through the seams. You can repeat this process several times.
Step 8: Visual inspection
When the bouncy castle is completely dry, carefully check all areas again for any remaining mold spots. If necessary, repeat the cleaning process.
Step 9: Prevent mold on the bouncy castle
It is best to store the bouncy castle completely dry. This is the most important rule!
If this is not possible (e.g. due to late evening work or wet weather), this is not a problem for 2-4 weeks. During this period, mold formation is unlikely, even if the bouncy castle remains rolled up damp. The exact duration depends on the temperature and material. Nevertheless, the following applies: remove as much moisture as possible and plan for thorough drying as soon as possible!
Step 10: Store in a dry place
Store the bouncy castle in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight (to prevent material fatigue).
Step 11: Regular Cleaning
Occasional cleaning, even when there is no visible mold, can help prevent deposits that could promote mold growth.
